Staind - It's been a while analysis

Conventions of Music Genre: Rock/ ballad, the conventions shown in this video are the fact the whole set is candle lit witch shows darkness/ sadness, also with a narrative running along with the band performing the song.

Links between visual & Lyrics: There are plenty of links between visuals and lyrics in this music video, the ones I noticed most are; When the lyrics say 'since I last saw you' he's looking at a photo, also when he says 'the way the candles light you face' the shot moves to him with his girlfriend in candle light. When the lyrics sad the visual focuses on Aaron Lewis for example the line ' since I could love myself as well as' you see him sing it into the camera with a sad look on his face whilst looking down, this helps the audience to understand the lyrics more.

Links between visual & Music: At the start of the video there is no music as he gets in place to start writing the song, then when he's ready the music starts its at a slow pace so therefore all the shots are longer and slower and they focus on Aaron Lewis , However when the chorus comes in and the tempo picks up the focus switches to the band playing their instruments with quick cuts between each person. Another way the tempo of the music is emphasized throughout the video is the use of panning shots of Aaron Lewis singing the verses.

Selling the Artist: This video sells Aaron Lewis (Staind lead singer) by presenting the fact he has a good, powerful voice which is heard throughout the song, it also sells the band as a whole by showing their talent with close ups and emphasis on them playing their instruments. The opening shot of the band in a candle lit room is a good establishing shot of the band selling them as a whole.

Voyeurisms & the art of 'looking': Aaron Lewis is presented as a bit of a rocker as in the video you can see he's got a lot of tattoos and is also smoking throughout the video, this is a typical stereotype of a rock and roll star. Another example of voyeurism is when the way the girl is presented throughout the video as cute and innocent.
